Most of the important women in history that we hear of, especially in technological advancement, have been western focused. Marie Curie, Katherine Johnson, Mae Jemison and the like. While their contributions are very important in making science and technology to what it is today, we should also give praise to the Filipino women who did a lot for this country and for innovation. It is very rare to hear about Filipino innovation in our news and the general public might not be aware of these intelligent and ambitious women that have helped thousands of people around the country. Our Women Hall of Fame has 3 qualifications: volunteer work, innovation in science, and impressive startups. We chose these because it is what aligns the best with the Lilium Society’s Mission and VisionFirst, let’s start with our first category: volunteer work. Carmina started InvestEd as a way to combat the lack of education in certain parts of the country. InvestEd provides the youth with loan products so they can access higher education and create meaningful opportunities for themselves without the risk of scammers and predatory interest rates. InvestEd has helped over 1,000 people nationwide and provides award-winning classes for the students that are interested in the company. Next is Angela Chen who pioneered an upskilling startup that lets students “study now, pay later.” Eskuwelabs educates students through its data science programs that promise to equip students with the knowledge and skills to become employed as data scientists and data analysts, some of which last only a few weeks. They have helped over 3000 people and 90% of learners in the course got a job within 3 months of graduation.Second category is for innovation in science. Yzabelle Palma invented the AirDisc which is a way to air-condition buildings and houses without the associated ozone-depleting chemical agents in it. Another advantage of AirDisc is that it only uses 150 watts compared to the 1,500 watts that a typical air conditioner uses. Reportedly, the Airdisc was invented by accident. The original product was supposed to be an “Airwave oven” but she noticed that the machine blew out cold air at the other end. After that she had the idea to create the machine.And lastly, our last category: impressive startups. Aiko Reyes is one of the founding members of “Peddlr” a now rapidly rising e-commerce app where you can manage your business. Peddlr provides services such as bookkeeping, inventory, and provides a smooth experience to customers by also directly providing a check out option. And lastly, Grace David, she is the CEO for Edukasyon, an edtech startup that provides course and tuition data from thousands of SHS and tertiary institutions in the country, giving students and parents the chance to compare and decide on potential courses.
